CAT Question Paper Format

One of the best ways to start your preparation for any competitive test is to begin with a look at the past few actual test papers. This is so true of the CAT as well. Several websites can provide you the CAT 2013 question paper pdf online. If you plan to take the CAT in 2014, going through the CAT 2013 question paper is a good starting point. But the CAT exam paper is a starting point only as you need to go through the actual CAT papers from the past 4-5 years to get a really good idea. This is so because the test patterns change with time, more so in the CAT. Therefore, it makes good sense to have a comprehensive look at the 4-5 years’ actual CAT papers, beginning with the CAT 2013 question paper.

Going through the CAT 2013 question paper can reveal the following major points:
1. Overall scheme of the test and the distribution of questions in the CAT exam paper
2. Major subjects covered in the test (Quantitative Ability, Logical Reasoning, Verbal Ability, Data Interpretation)

3. Topic-wise distribution of test questions (How many questions on which topic, say within the Quantitative Ability area - Number system, percentage, algebra, geometry, sets, time-distance etc OR within the Verbal Ability area – Reading Comprehension, Grammar, Vocabulary, Critical Reasoning etc.)
4. Relative emphasis given to different topics in the CAT exam paper.

From this analysis of the CAT 2013 question paper, you come to know which particular subject and the topic within it commands what kind of weightage. It gives you a good starting point to plan your preparation accordingly. For example, this analysis may reveal that within the Verbal Ability area, the CAT 2013 question paper featured 12 questions based on Reading Comprehension. Now these questions, as you will discover, make up a major portion of the Verbal Ability area, and thus, demand greater attention than others with lesser weightage in the CAT 2013 question paper.

Similarly, if you repeat the process with the Quantitative Ability area, you may find that the CAT actual test offers many questions on the number system but very few questions on set theory. Now apply the same process to other actual CAT papers from the years 2009 to 2012. Make a comparative chart based on the topic–wise distribution of questions and now you will have a fairly good idea of what you are likely to face in the actual CAT paper. You can make a plan of preparation accordingly, considering all these things but while doing so, please keep in mind that you need to make allowances for an element of surprise in the actual CAT paper.

The test-maker would always like to throw a surprise by including a new type of test item or by excluding a popular question type. The idea behind all this is to exert a little stress and know how the candidate manages to tackle the test (after all, the ability to handle surprises is also an important parameter of problem solving and management). Therefore, while preparing on the basis of your analysis, you have to make provision for some amount of surprise in the actual CAT paper. It would be necessary to safeguard yourself against any kind of unpleasant “surprise” so that you do not miss your coveted PRIZE !
