MAT 2011 Analysis

The Management Aptitude Test (MAT) is conducted by All India Management Association (AIMA) every year for short listing candidates for post graduate programs. The MAT score is used by many institutes. MAT is conducted 4 times a year that is in February, May, September and December.

The pattern of the paper was same as that of previous years. Also the level of the questions was same. There were no major changes. The breakup of the paper is given as follows:

SECTIONAL - ANALYSIS
SECTION I: Language Comprehension

Evaluation:The level of the questions was easy to moderate. Verbal Ability covered entirely every topic of English usage. The section had equal number of questions divided among Reading comprehension (20) and English usage and vocabulary (20). Reading comprehension passages were of moderate level. There were 5 passages with 4 questions each. The other varieties of questions were error identification, Para jumbles, fill in the blanks, summary, word meanings and best way of writing the sentence. Expected attempt in this section could be 25-28.

SECTION II: Mathematical Skills

Evaluation:This section can be considered of moderate to difficult level. It required lengthy calculations. Maximum questions were based on Arithmetic and Number theory. The questions were from ratio & percentages, profit & loss, partnership, simple and compound interest, speed distance time, time & work, pipes & cisterns, allegations & mixtures, and averages. Some of the questions were also on trigonometry, permutation & combination, probability & mensuration. Expected attempt in this section could be 15-18 questions with 85% accuracy.

SECTION III: Intelligence & Critical Reasoning

Evaluation: This section was the easiest of all. The variety of questions was traditional like analytical reasoning, and critical reasoning. The critical reasoning questions were of easy to moderate level including questions on statements & conclusion, assertion & reason, and statement & assumptions. The analytical reasoning questions were easy and included questions on direction, cubes, number/letter series, Venn diagrams, blood relations, etc. Expected attempt in this section could be 28-30 questions with 90% accuracy.

SECTION IV: Data Analysis & Sufficiency

Evaluation:The section was moderate to difficult level and required lengthy calculations. This section comprised of Data Interpretation (DI), Data sufficiency (DS), and Data Comparison (DC). DI covered the graphs like table, bar graph, pie chart, line graph, and combination of graphs. DS and DC were less time consuming than DI. Expected attempt in this section could be 15-18 questions with 85% accuracy.

SECTION V: General Awareness

Evaluation: The level of the section was moderate. Questions were based on dynamic General Knowledge. Various questions were based on the issues like economics, politics, sports, banking, etc. If a student is into reading he/she could easily excel in this section. The score in this section was not considered in the composite score.
