How Early Should I Start My Preparation?
The key to an ideal CAT preparation plan does not lie in any formulation or shortcuts but in an early, planned and structured timeline. If you are an undergraduate student aiming to directly pursue MBA right after graduating, it is ideal that you start preparing in the final year of your college. However, if you are working in a full-time professional setting, it is ideal that you start at least 6-8 months prior. According to the timeline you are aiming to dedicate for the CAT preparation, your ideal roadmap can be divided into three distinct stages:
Stage 1: Concept Building (3–4 months)
- Since it is the beginning of your preparation, it is ideal that you start by understanding the sectional division between VARC, DILR and QA.
- Then, start by learning basic concepts that fall under these sections such as arithmetic, algebra, geometry under QA, RC under VARC and basic arrangements and puzzles in DILR.
- It is ideal that you either join a professional preparation course or start by consulting reliable conceptual videos or textbooks to work through practice problems.
- Finally, understand and memorize key formulas, rules and concepts for each section.
Stage 2: Practice & Application (3–4 months)
- Next, once you have acquainted yourself with your problem-solving skills through regular practice, it is time to apply concepts and solve a variety of questions. Remember, the more you practice questions and section-wise tests, the more optimally you will be able to build your fundamentals with speed and accuracy.
- Time yourself and solve previous years' papers and online mock tests regularly to identify weak areas. The end goal is to sharpen your problem-solving skills and improve accuracy.
Stage 3: Overdrive & Testing (2–3 months)
- Now that you are nearing the exam day, strengthen your preparation with intensive mock tests. Focus on time management through full length mock tests to improve speed and accuracy.
- Further, it is important to devote some time and review all mocks thoroughly in order to improve weak areas.
- By the end of your preparation journey, you should be able to successfully build an exam strategy, refine speed and improve confidence.
What Are Some Tips & Strategies I Should Keep In Mind?
- Master the Basics: Concentrate on the strengthening of the basic concepts under Quantitative Ability (QA), Verbal Ability and Reading Comprehension (VARC), and Data Interpretation and Logical Reasoning (DILR). Learn the basics first and then proceed to the complicated topics.
- Focus on Time Management: CAT is a time-based exam, thus it is important to train yourself on how to manage your time well. You can optimally build time management skills by taking the mock tests.
- Regular Mock Test Sprint followed by Evaluation: Consistent mock tests should be taken to acquaint yourself with the exam environment. Following each test, it is wise to spend some time evaluating the test and notice weak areas. This exercise will aid the development of stamina, time management and strengthen otherwise poor areas.
- Prioritize Weak Areas: Reflect through mock tests and practice questions to find out your weak areas at an early stage and allocate time on strengthening it.
- Read More for VARC: Read as many different materials as possible. Newspapers, magazines, essays and literature to achieve faster and comprehendible reading skills. This will not only assist you to do well in RC, but also increase your VA.
- Concentrate on Precision and Not Quantity: In order to avoid excessive negative marking, it is wise to focus on answering fewer, yet right questions rather than all of them.
- Calm and Composure over Knowledge: Stay calm, composed and concentrated on the day of exam. Stay positive and have confidence in your knowledge.
