MAT: Language Comprehension
The most important part of the Verbal part is Reading Comprehension as the topic carries maximum weightage. So, you must develop a good reading speed and strong vocabulary to get a decent score in this section. The non–RC section covers questions like spotting the errors in sentences, sentence completion, sentence rearrangement, word usage (vocabulary), & and critical reasoning based questions. Following is a description of question types asked in MAT verbal section with tactics on handling them:
  • Reading Comprehension: Usually there are five passages in MAT with 4-5 questions each. These are short passages (300-500 words approximately) with mostly, direct questions. All the passages are more or less easy to moderate, in terms of difficulty level. You should also practice passages from diverse areas like history, sociology, and science & technology, etc. as passages are generally from a variety of sources.

  • Critical Reasoning: In critical reasoning, the commonly asked questions are either related to the essence of the passage or as logically follows from the passage. To score well in critical reasoning based questions, it is important that basic concepts of critical reasoning are clear. One should carefully attempt these questions as their interpretation makes all the difference.
  • Vocabulary/ Word Usage: Questions on vocabulary usage are based on finding the synonyms, antonyms and meaning of idioms and phrases. The level of difficulty of vocabulary-based questions is moderate.
  • Sentence Rearrangement & Completion: To attempt sentence rearrangement questions, you should be aware of the tricks related to this topic. On the other hand, sentence completion questions entail understanding the context and meanings of the given options.
