The Management Aptitude Test (MAT), administered by the All India Management Association (AIMA), continues to remain one of the most widely taken entrance exams for MBA admissions in India. What makes MAT consistently relevant is not that it is the toughest management exam in the country, but that it tests exactly what management aspirants often underestimate: speed, composure, and the ability to make sensible decisions under pressure. For the February 2026 session, the exam was conducted in two formats: a Paper-Based Test (PBT) on March 1, 2026, and a Computer-Based Test (CBT) on March 8, 2026. As per reports, more than 20,000 candidates appeared in each mode.

The exam evaluates candidates across five sections: Language Comprehension, Mathematical Skills, Data Analysis & Sufficiency, Intelligence & Critical Reasoning, and Indian & Global Environment. A total attempt of 100–115 questions with 80–85%+ accuracy across the four composite sections generally translated into a strong percentile. That is the number students should actually pay attention to, not just how many questions they touched. MAT has always rewarded controlled attempts over reckless volume. The Indian & Global Environment section, while relatively easy and high-scoring, does not contribute to the final composite percentile used by most B-schools, which is why smart candidates treated it as a scoring add-on, not the centre of the paper.

MAT February 2026 held its ground as a moderately challenging but accessible exam. It did not demand brilliance. It demanded clarity, control, and the ability to keep making good decisions across sections without letting one difficult patch ruin the rest of the paper. The emphasis remained firmly on conceptual understanding, calculation speed, and intelligent time allocation rather than on any extreme or unpredictable level of difficulty. The MAT May 2026 exam followed the same exam pattern and structure. According to the test-takers, none of the sections was too tough. However, compared to other sections, Mathematical Skills and Data Analysis & Sufficiency were trickier and more time-consuming.

Language Comprehension, as the name suggests, this section tests candidates’ English language skills through Reading Comprehension and Verbal Ability questions. There were two Reading Comprehension passages carrying five questions each. The themes of the passages were economic and socio-cultural. The questions were both fact and inference based.

The Verbal Ability questions comprised of grammar, vocabulary, and para jumbles or para completion. The grammar questions were on sentence correction, error identification, one-word substitution, and summary-based. The vocabulary questions covered idioms, synonyms-antonyms, fill in the blanks, analogies, etc. This section should have taken 25 to 30 minutes to complete.

This section primarily check the reasoning ability of test candidates’ reasoning ability. The topics of the questions included Blood Relations, Coding-Decoding, Series (Letter, Number and Alpha Numeric), Venn Diagrams, Syllogisms, Distribution and Arrangement, among others. The estimated duration to complete the section was 35 to 40 minutes. Some of the questions were tricky and time-consuming.

This section tests candidates’ quantitative abilities. Mathematical Skills was one of the toughest sections in the exam. Arithmetic was a dominant topic in this section followed by Number System, Modern Math, Algebra and Geometry.

Within Artihmetic, topics covered were percentage, profit and loss, simple and compound interest, ratio and proportion, time, speed and distance, etc. From the Number System, topics included HCF/LCM, divisibility rules, remainders, unit digit, etc.

In Modern Mathematics, questions were from Permutation Combination and Probability. Algebra questions included Linear and Quadratic equations. Geometry questions were on Areas, Volumes, Circles, Triangles, etc.  Spending 35 to 40 minutes in this section was considered sufficient.

This section was of easy to moderate level of difficulty. It required analysing and interpreting data from bar graph, line graph, pie charts, data comparison and sufficiency areas. Application of Arithmetic and Mensuration concepts was required to solve certain questions of Data Sufficiency Caselets. Approximately 25 to 30 minutes was enough to attempt this section.

This was one of the easy sections of MAT May 2026. Although there was a mix of static GK and current affairs questions, the former dominated the section. The Static GK questions were on history, geography, science, national records, etc. Current Affairs questions were on Business and Economics, Sports, Awards, etc. Spending around 15 to 20 minutes in this section was enough.

A total attempt of 100–115 questions with around 80 per cent accuracy across the four composite sections generally converts to a high percentile. Once the MAT result is declared, AIMA sends the scorecards of candidates to the participating institutes. Based on that, the B-schools release the list of shortlisted candidates for admission. They have to participate in the selection process which includes Group Discussion and Personal Interview.

In case test-takers are not satisfied with their scores in MAT May 2026, they may appear for either both, or one of the upcoming sessions to be conducted in September and December. Candidates must note that they are also allowed to appear for both the paper-pencil-based, as well as the computer-based mode, or one of the modes as per their convenience.

MAT scores are accepted by over 600 B-schools across India offering MBA and PGDM programmes.
