The Xavier Aptitude Test (XAT) is one of India’s oldest MBA/PGDM entrance exams. XLRI Jamshedpur conducts it on behalf of XAMI (Xavier Association of Management Institutes) and has done so for over 75 years. XAT 2027 will be held on Sunday, 3 January 2027, from 2:00 PM to 5:00 PM as a single-slot, three-hour computer-based test across 100+ cities. More than 250 institutes accept the XAT score, including the 13 XAMI member institutes.
XAT 2027 has 95 multiple-choice questions to be completed in 180 minutes. Part 1 has 75 questions that must be completed in 170 minutes, including Verbal Ability and Logical Reasoning (26), Decision Making (21), and Quantitative Ability and Data Interpretation (28). Part 2 contains 20 General Knowledge questions to be solved in 10 minutes. Only Part 1 scores are used to calculate the XAT percentile. The General Knowledge score is used only by XLRI in its final selection process.
The XAT 2027 marking scheme awards 1 mark for each correct answer and deducts 0.25 marks for every wrong answer in Part 1. A penalty of 0.10 marks is applied for every unattempted question beyond the first 8 in Part 1. There is no negative marking in the General Knowledge section. There are no sectional time limits in Part 1, so candidates can attempt the sections in any order. The General Knowledge section (Part 2) appears on the screen only after the candidate submits Part 1.
XAT is known for its Decision Making section, which is not present in any other major MBA entrance exam. The registration fee is ?2,300, plus ?200 for each XLRI programme selected.

Xavier School of Management was founded in Jamshedpur in 1949, which makes it one of India's oldest business schools. It runs XAT for itself and on behalf of the other XAMI institutes. The XAT 2027 bulletin describes the test as "a benchmark in selecting the most qualified candidates for management education for over 75 years."
XAMI (Xavier Association of Management Institutes) was formed in November 1996 and is registered under the Societies Registration Act XXI of 1860. Its President is Fr. S. George S.J., Director of XLRI. Its Treasurer-cum-Secretary is Fr. Joseph Marianus Kujur S.J., Director of XISS Ranchi. The XAT 2027 bulletin lists 13 member institutes. Beyond XAMI, 141 associate institutes across India use XAT scores in their admissions.

XAT 2027 Eligibility Criteria
To be eligible for the Xavier Aptitude Test (XAT) 2027, candidates must meet the requirements set by XLRI Jamshedpur. The criteria focus on academic qualifications and individual B-schools. There is no age limit and no restriction on the number of attempts.
Educational Qualifications
- Candidates must hold a recognised bachelor’s degree of at least three years (or equivalent) in any discipline.
- Final-year undergraduate students are eligible to apply. They must complete their final graduation examinations on or before June 11, 2027.
- XAT does not set a minimum percentage in graduation. Individual B-schools may apply their own eligibility criteria and cut-offs at the shortlisting stage.
Age Limit and Number of Attempts
- There is no upper or lower age limit for XAT 2027.
- There is no restriction on the number of attempts. However, the XAT Entrance Test is conducted once a year.
Work Experience
- Work experience is not required for the XAT exam itself.
- For XLRI’s PGDM (Business Management) and PGDM (Human Resource Management) programmes, no prior work experience is required.
- Candidates applying for XLRI’s PGDM (General Management) must have at least three years of full-time managerial or supervisory work experience. Check the official XLRI prospectus for the exact requirement for 2027.
Nationality
- Indian nationals can apply through XAT 2027.
- NRI, foreign, PIO and OCI candidates can apply through XAT or through valid GMAT/GRE scores, depending on the programme.
XAT 2027 Exam Pattern
XAT 2027 consists of 95 multiple-choice questions, which candidates must answer in 180 minutes. XLRI Jamshedpur conducts it as a computer-based test on Sunday, January 3, 2027, from 2:00 PM to 5:00 PM, in a single slot.

The Part 1 and Part 2 structure is in line with the XAT 2026 instructions. The 2027 instructions are awaited.
Marking Scheme for Part 1
- XAT offers +1 mark for every correct answer. However, it deducts 0.25 marks for every incorrect answer.
- Candidates should note that 8 simultaneous unattempted questions do not carry negative marking; after that, each unattempted question will cost you 0.10 marks.
Marking Scheme for Part 2
- For General Knowledge, there's no negative marking. GK doesn't count towards your overall percentile or cut-off, but XLRI does consider it in the selection process for its own programmes.
Key Exam Highlights
- There are no sectional time limits. Candidates can attempt the sections in any order and move between them.
- XAT will provide you an on-screen scientific calculator.
- There will be a single slot for the candidates. Everyone takes the same paper at the same time.
Hitbullseye tip: Since XAT penalises both wrong answers and excessive skipping, practice full-length mocks to find an attempt strategy that balances accuracy and coverage.
XAT 2027 Syllabus
XLRI Jamshedpur doesn't release an official syllabus for the XAT 2027 Entrance Test. However, it publishes important XAT topics, and the section descriptions below are based on XLRI's official material. The topic lists under "Topics to practice" are Hitbullseye's guidance based on the areas XLRI describes, not an official syllabus.

1. Verbal Ability and Logical Reasoning Syllabus
The VALR section checks how well you read, understand and reason with written English. XAT is known for unusual passages, including poems and cartoons.
Topics to practise (Hitbullseye guidance):
- Reading comprehension: long and short passages, poems and cartoons
- Critical reasoning: assumptions, inferences, strengthening and weakening arguments
- Para jumbles and odd sentence out
- Cloze tests and fill in the blanks
- Vocabulary and word usage
- Grammar and sentence correction
How to prepare: Read editorials and some poetry daily, and practise critical reasoning under a timer.
2. XAT Decision Making Syllabus
This is XAT's signature section. You read a situation from business or everyday life and choose the most sensible course of action. There's usually no formula to apply; the questions test your judgement, ethics and ability to weigh competing interests.
Topics to practise (Hitbullseye guidance):
- Ethical dilemmas in the workplace
- Business and managerial situations
- Stakeholder conflicts and prioritisation
- Data-based decision sets, such as arrangements, allocations and rule-based conditions
- Personal and social dilemmas
How to prepare: This is XAT's signature section, so give it regular, dedicated practice. Solve DM sets from past XAT papers, and before reading the options, identify the stakeholders, constraints, and ethical angle.
3. XAT Quantitative Aptitude & Data Interpretation Syllabus
This section tests mathematical problem-solving and your ability to make sense of data.
Topics to practice (Hitbullseye guidance):
- Arithmetic: percentages, profit and loss, ratio and proportion, averages, mixtures, simple and compound interest, time and work, time-speed-distance
- Algebra: equations, inequalities, functions, progressions, logarithms
- Geometry and mensuration: lines, triangles, circles, polygons, areas and volumes, coordinate geometry
- Modern maths: permutations and combinations, probability, set theory
- Number system: divisibility, remainders, factors, HCF and LCM
- Data interpretation: tables, bar charts, line graphs, pie charts and caselets
How to prepare: Strengthen your arithmetic and algebra fundamentals first, then move to mixed sets and DI caselets.
4. General Knowledge
GK has 20 questions: 8 on static GK and 12 on current affairs. It doesn't count towards your overall XAT percentile, but XLRI considers it in the selection process for its own programmes.
Topics to practise (Hitbullseye guidance):
- Current affairs: national and international news, business and economy, government schemes, awards, sports, science and technology
- Static GK: history, geography, Indian polity, the economy, famous personalities, books and authors, organisations and their headquarters
How to prepare: Follow business, economy and national news daily, and revise monthly current-affairs summaries.
XAT 2027 Preparation Tips
Decision Making is unique to XAT. Practise caselets from previous XAT papers regularly. Focus on ethical dilemmas, prioritisation, and logical choices rather than pure calculation. There is no fixed formula. Improve judgement by solving 2–3 sets daily and reviewing the reasoning behind correct options.
Section-Wise Preparation Strategy
- Verbal Ability and Logical Reasoning: Practice reading comprehension (including unusual passages), critical reasoning, and para jumbles. Build vocabulary in context.
- Decision Making: Solve previous year caselets and focus on consistency in reasoning.
- Quantitative Ability and Data Interpretation: Strengthen arithmetic, algebra, and geometry. Practise DI sets under timed conditions. Use the on-screen calculator efficiently during mocks.
- General Knowledge: Cover current affairs of the last 6–12 months and basic static GK. Since there is no negative marking, attempt all questions.
Time Management Tips for XAT
- There are no sectional time limits in Part 1. Plan a section order that matches your strengths.
- Do not get stuck on difficult questions. The skip penalty applies only after 8 unattempted questions in Part 1.
- Allocate roughly 10 minutes for the General Knowledge section and attempt it fully.
- Take full-length mocks in the actual 180-minute format and analyse every attempt.

Applying to Other Institutes
Registering for XAT doesn't automatically mean you've applied to XLRI or any other institute. You must select XLRI programmes in the XAT form, and apply separately to each associate institute through its own website.
Common Mistakes to Avoid while Filling Out the XAT Application Form
Candidates must finish their registration well before December 6, 2026, so you can focus fully on mocks and decision-making practice in the final weeks. Avoid these mistakes while filling out the application form.
- Using someone else's email ID or mobile number
- A name that doesn't match your certificates
- Uploading a blurry photo or signature
- Not saving the e-receipt after payment
- Assuming XAT registration covers other colleges
XAT 2027 Admit Card
XLRI will release the XAT 2027 admit card on the official website, xatonline.in. As per the XAT 2027 bulletin and FAQ, downloads start from December 20, 2026 (tentative).
How to Download XAT 2027 Admit Card
The admit card usually shows your name, XAT ID, photograph, signature, exam date and time, reporting time, and exam centre address. Keep your XAT ID handy for login and for any later communication with XLRI.
- Visit xatonline.in.
- Log in with your XAT ID and password.
- Open the link to download your admit card.
- Check every detail carefully, then download and print at least two copies.
Important XAT 2027 Admit Card Rules
Your signature on the admit card and on the attendance sheet must match the signature you uploaded. A mismatch can lead to disqualification.
- Carry a printout of the admit card to the centre. Soft copies alone aren't enough for entry.
- Carry a valid photo ID along with the admit card.
- If any detail is wrong, raise a query through the "Any Query? Ask Us" option on your XAT dashboard, or write to admis@xlri.ac.in.
Documents for Exam Day
For the XAT 2027 exam day, candidates have to bring their admit card and one original photo ID, such as an Aadhaar card, Voter ID, PAN card, passport, driving licence, college ID or employee ID to the exam centre.
XAT 2027 Answer Key
The XAT 2027 officials have not announced the answer key date or an objection window. After the exam, keep checking xatonline.in for any candidate response sheet, question paper or official key that XLRI may release.
Based on previous year trends, it is expected that XLRI will release XAT 2027 response sheet and answer keys in the first week of January. You can use it only to estimate your raw score with the official marking scheme:
|

In case of wrong answer options or any discrepancies in the official XAT answer keys, you may submit objections within the stipulated date by following the official procedure. Based on the final answer keys, test takers’ marks will be calculated. There is no provision for reviewing the final answer key or result.
Note: Marks in the General Knowledge section aren't used for the overall XAT percentile. XLRI may still use GK for its own programme selection.
XAT 2027 Result
As per the XAT 2027 bulletin:
- Result date: last week of January 2027
- Scorecard download window: January 31, 2027, to June 30, 2027, from xatonline.in
The official FAQ also says the result is announced about three weeks after the exam. No hard copy of the scorecard is sent by post. Download and save it within the window above. The scorecard will include information such as overall and sectional scaled scores and percentiles, along with candidate name, photograph and signature.
How is the XAT Percentile Calculated?
The XAT percentile is calculated only on the basis of Part 1 scores. Part 1 consists of Verbal Ability and Logical Reasoning, Decision Making, and Quantitative Ability and Data Interpretation (75 questions in total).
The General Knowledge score from Part 2 is not included in the overall percentile calculation. XLRI uses the GK score only in its own final selection process. Other institutes that accept XAT scores generally rely on the overall percentile derived from Part 1.
XAT is a single-slot exam, so there is no slot-wise normalisation. Scores are equated across the entire candidate pool.
XAT 2027 Selection Process
Registering for XAT does not mean automatic admission to XLRI or any other institute. You must apply separately to each programme or college you want. XLRI has no role in the selection process of other XAT-accepting institutes.

2. XLRI PGDM (GM)
- You may apply through XAT 2027 or through GMAT/GRE (taken between January 1, 2023, and December 31, 2026).
- Shortlisting also considers academic ability and relevant work experience, along with the entrance score.
- XAT-based GM interviews are conducted online in February; GMAT/GRE interviews run in multiple rounds from September to December 2026.
- Eligibility includes at least 3 years of managerial/supervisory experience as on March 31, 2027.
3. Other XAT-Accepting Institutes (XAMI and Associate Members)
- Over 250 institutes use the XAT score.
- Each institute sets its own cut-offs and weightages for different XAT components.
- You must complete that institute's own application form and follow its GD/PI or other selection steps.
- XLRI shares XAT scores with associate member institutes by the end of January to support their selection.
What is a Good Score and Percentile in XAT 2027?
A good XAT percentile depends on the target institute.
- For XLRI (BM and HRM programmes), a percentile of 95 and above is generally considered strong for interview calls. Exact cut-offs vary by programme, academic stream, and gender.
- For other reputed B-schools that accept XAT, a percentile in the 85–95 range is usually competitive.
- Percentiles between 75 and 85 open options at several private B-schools.
There is no official “good score” published by XLRI. Candidates should check the previous year’s cut-offs of their target colleges and aim higher than the last known cut-off.

XAT 2027 FAQs
Q. Does XAT deduct marks for unattempted questions?
A. Yes, in Part 1 of XAT, there is no penalty for the first 8 unattempted questions. From the 9th unattempted question onwards, 0.10 marks are deducted for each unattempted question. This penalty does not apply to the General Knowledge section.
Q. How should I prepare for VALR in XAT 2027, especially Critical Reasoning and RC?
A. Candidates can practice reading comprehension using previous XAT papers, including poems and unusual passages. For Critical Reasoning, focus on identifying assumptions, conclusions, and logical flaws. Do 2–3 RCs and a few critical reasoning questions daily, then review every wrong answer carefully. You can also refer to the Hitbullseye Critical Reasoning and RC ebook and full-length mock test.
Q. Which mocks or question banks should I use for XAT 2027?
A. Stick to previous year XAT papers as your main source, especially for Decision Making. For mocks, use the XAT official mock test and one or two reliable series that follow the current XAT 2027 pattern (95 questions, Part 1 + Part 2). Candidates can also take mock tests on Hitbullseye instead of gathering too many resources.
Q. How can I prepare for CAT and XAT 2027 together?
A. You can cover the common areas such as Quant, VARC, DI through CAT preparation. Dedicate separate time for Decision Making and GK closer to XAT 2027. Since XAT 2027 has no sectional time limits, practice flexible attempt strategies in your later mocks.
Q. Should I appear for XAT 2027 if my main target is CAT?
A. Yes, if you can do it without disturbing your CAT preparation. It gives you experience and an additional set of college options. Treat XAT 2027 as a real attempt, not just a trial.
Q. Is XAT 2027 tougher than CAT?
A. XAT and CAT are different entrance exams. CAT has sectional time limits and is more standardised. XAT 2027 has Decision Making (unique) and no sectional time limits. Many students find XAT 2027’s Decision Making and some RCs more unpredictable, but Quant is often considered more manageable than CAT.
Q. How should I prepare for Decision Making in XAT 2027?
A. Candidates can solve previous years' XAT Decision Making caselets. However, you can concentrate on ethical judgement, prioritisation, and logical consistency. Do not treat it as pure logic or pure ethics. Analyse why the correct option is better than the others.
Q. What is a good percentile in XAT 2027 for XLRI?
A. For XLRI BM, a 95+ percentile in XAT 2027 is generally strong. For HRM, slightly lower percentiles can also work. Exact cut-offs change every year by programme and category. Aim higher than the previous year’s cut-off for your target programme.
Q. How can I improve Quant for XAT 2027 if it is weak?
A. You can focus on arithmetic, basic algebra, and geometry. Practise previous year XAT Quant questions. Since there is no sectional time limit in XAT 2027, you can spend more time on Quant if your other sections are strong. Accuracy matters more than attempting everything.
Q. What should I do after XAT 2027 for XLRI’s GD/PI?
A. Start preparing your personal story (why MBA, why XLRI, gaps, work experience) immediately after the exam. Practise current affairs and be ready to clearly discuss your academic and professional background.
