The first Indian Institute of Management was IIM Calcutta, established in November 1961. Soon after, IIM Ahmedabad was founded in December 1961. IIMs offer a wide range of programs, including undergraduate, postgraduate, executive, integrated, and PhD courses. Admission is primarily through entrance exams such as CAT (for MBA programmes) and IPMAT/JIPMAT (for Integrated Programmes), followed by interviews and academic performance.

The Indian Institutes of Management (IIMs) are known as India's Ivy League for management studies and are considered among the best management institutes for producing managers and business leaders. Due to high demand and challenging programs, IIMS' selection criteria are the toughest, with a low acceptance rate. There are a total of 22 IIMs at present, including new and baby IIMs, including IIM Guwahati.

The Indian Institutes of Management (IIMs) were initially registered as societies under the Societies Registration Act of 1860, but are now governed by the Indian Institutes of Management Act of 2017, which declares them Institutions of National Importance with the authority to award degrees. They are led by India's Ministry of Human Resource Development.

IIMs Placement 2025-2026

IIMs in India see impressive placements for 2025-26. The highest numbers were recorded by IIM Calcutta with a domestic package of Rs 1.45 crore and an international offer of Rs 1.10 crore, with an average of Rs 36 LPA. IIM Lucknow registered the first-ever domestic average above Rs. 1 crore with an average package of Rs. 33.2 LPA. IIM Ahmedabad had a highest package of Rs. 1.10 crore (official IPRS data), and the IIM Bangalore had a highest package of approximately Rs. 1.15 crore, with average packages between Rs. 34.8- Rs. 35.35 LPA.

The IIMs regularly see recruitment from top multinationals and firms such as McKinsey, BCG, Bain & Company, Goldman Sachs, Amazon, Microsoft, Accenture, Deloitte, etc. IIMs have produced successful entrepreneurs apart from good corporate placements like Deep Kalra (MakeMyTrip), Sanjeev Bikhchandani (Naukri.com), Falguni Nayar (Nykaa), Peyush Bansal (Lenskart) and Sriharsha Majety (Swiggy).

How to Choose the Right IIM

Choosing the right IIM is a vital decision for every MBA aspirant. All IIMs are prestigious, but every institute has its own strengths. Here are five important factors to consider before you make your choice:

1. CAT Cut Off

The CAT percentile is the first filter for IIMs admission.

For IIMs like IIM Ahmedabad, Bangalore and Calcutta, they usually look for a percentile of 99+ for the General category.
The mid level IIMs generally take candidates between 95 to 98 percentile.
The newer IIMs may have a relatively lower cut off (around 90-95 percentile).

Do check out the cut-offs of previous year’s of your target IIMs and set a realistic target score.

2. NIRF Rankings

The NIRF ranking is a good measure for the overall performance of an institute in terms of teaching, research and placements.

IIM Ahmedabad, Bangalore and Kozhikode are consistently among the top.
Rankings help you to shortlist the institutes on the basis of reputation and long term value.

3. Program Offered

Not all IIMs have the same courses. Find out whether the institute provides the specialisation or course you are interested in:

Flagship MBA / PGP – Conducted by all the IIMs
Integrated Programme in Management (IPM) – 5 years after Class 12
Specialised programmes like PGP in Business Analytics, Food & Agribusiness, Human Resource Management, etc.

4. Placements

Placements are one of the most important factors for most students. Look at:

Sector-wise opportunities (Consulting, Finance, Product, Marketing, etc.)

Remember, the highest package is usually an outlier. Focus more on the average and median packages.

5. Location

Location plays a significant role in campus life, internship opportunities, and placement exposure.

Metro cities (Bangalore, Mumbai, Delhi NCR) offer better corporate exposure.
Some students prefer quieter campuses for focused learning.
Consider climate, connectivity, and proximity to your hometown as well.
