Admissions Criteria for Altera Institute
The institute considers thousands of applications each year, and the intake is based on your overall profile strength, not just test scores. Your entrance exam scores are important as an initial filter but will not be the sole and final determiner of admissions.
The institute seeks students who can demonstrate intent, ability, and potential qualities that go beyond just exam scores. The admissions team wants students who know their career goals, can discuss their strengths with concrete examples, and demonstrate suitability for Digital & AI first careers.
Phase 1: Pre-Application Profile (50% Weight)  
The first phase is further divided into 2 stages, where the initial stage examines the following dimensions of your profile:   
1.Education:
Altera Institute reviews your educational performance and history to determine whether you will fit into the program. The minimum requirement is a 50% aggregate, but more importance is given to consistency across academic history, as well as the depth displayed in your chosen subjects and applicable coursework. For example, engineering students who have developed solid data interpretation skills and commerce students who have excelled in accounting would be considered positively.
2.Competitive Exam Scores:
Altera Institute accepts CAT, XAT, NMAT, and GMAT scores. Last year, the median score for shortlisting candidates was in the 90th percentile in CAT and equivalent scores in XAT and NMAT. These are not final cutoffs, as your overall profile is more important. This year's safe scores are expected to be higher given the massive growth in volume of applications due to the strong placement outcomes delivered by the institute in the previous year.

For fresh graduates, the quality of internships, leadership positions, participation in clubs, startups, and competitions will be considered. However, information regarding internships and other extra/co-curriculars should be mentioned in the CV or in the SOPs. They should not be clubbed in the work exp section.

4.Quality of Responses in the Application Form:

This is not a list of strengths. You are to choose one or two distinct skills that will be present in every situation, make a measurable impact, and are not typical, such as leadership or communication (e.g., organizing ambiguous problems, managing stakeholders, first-principles thinking). This can be best articulated using the STAR framework: Situation, Task, Action, Result, which means your assertion is supported by evidence and consequences.
Q3: Where do you see yourself 5 years from now, and how will Altera Institute help you get there?
Here you get the chance to show your vision and planning. Your goal can be role-based (Brand Manager/Product Manager), sector-based (eCommerce, consumer tech, BFSI), or even entrepreneurial (build a venture later), but it must be supported by a credible “why” which is grounded in actual experience, wisdom or exposure. Phase 2: Post-Application Profile (50% Weight)
Assessment Process Performance:  
This is the final aspect of the admission process where shortlisted candidates proceed to the three structured rounds mentioned below:   
1.Case Study Round:
The Case Study Round is typically a 30–40-minute, discussion-based evaluation process in which you are given a short case (usually 1–2 pages) to read for about 10 minutes. After this, you are asked to work toward a specific objective and discuss your recommendations with the interviewer. It is designed to feel like a real problem-solving conversation where you can expect questions on your assumptions, prioritization, trade-offs, and how you interpret the information provided in the case.
Note that it is not a viva where the interviewer checks whether you “know the industry”; it checks whether you can reason with fundamentals in an uncertain situation. It also judges your:
  • Ability to think in a structured way when information is incomplete (problem decomposition, prioritization, assumptions).   
  • Ability to communicate clearly and in context (articulating logic, asking the right questions, using data when available).   
  • Ability to reach conclusions logically rather than via hit-and-trial (hypothesis → analysis → trade-offs → recommendation).  
2. Personal Interview (Director's Round):
Next, candidates meet with Directors or senior leaders to assess fitment. The discussion covers your past experiences, interests, challenges you have faced, ambitions, and how well you match Altera Institute’s culture of progress and digital focus.
