Lal Bahadur Shastri Institute of Management 25th Foundation Day

Lal Bahadur Shastri Institute of Management, Delhi proudly organized its 25th Foundation Day on 22nd February, with General Bikram Singh (Retd), PVSM, UYSM, AVSM, SM, VSM, ADC, Former Chief of the Army Staff, Indian Army, being the Chief Guest for the Silver Jubilee Celebration of the Institute.

The ceremony started with a heart-warming performance by Mantra, The Music Society of LBSIM, followed by the screening of a short movie on the Great Son of India and our Former Prime Minister, Late Shri Lal Bahadur Shastri Ji. The dignitaries present then lighted the lamp, a symbol of brightness and prosperity and after the presentation of bouquets, Prof. D.K. Srivastava, Director, LBSIM was invited over to deliver the welcome address.

In order to emulate the spirit of LBSIM and the virtues it relies on, the Institute launched its very own anthem, on the auspicious occasion. LBSIM takes the opportunity to acknowledge the contribution made by Pandit Lakshimkant Patil, a renowned Music Director from Bhubaneshwar for the entire musical arrangement, Shri Abhishek Anand for the beautiful lyrics and Shri Rishi Pattnaik for coordination and production of the anthem.

To deliver the 25th Foundation Day Lecture on "Leadership Challenges for the Budding Corporate Leaders", General Bikram Singh, the former Chief of the Indian Army and Chairman Chiefs of Staff, was invited. During his eventful military career, he held a number of key appointments both in India and overseas. Before taking over as the Chief of Army Staff, he was the General Officer Commanding-in-Chief of the Eastern Command. He also commanded the prestigious Srinagar based 15 Corps that is responsible for the line of control and counter proxy war operations in the Kashmir Valley. The General has served in three UN missions in Nicaragua (ONUCA), El Salvador (ONUSAL) and the Democratic Republic of Congo (MONUC). During the Kargil war, he was the Army’s spokesman and conducted regular media briefings. He has lectured on various facets of Geopolitics and Strategic Affairs, Leadership, to name a few. For his distinguished and dedicated services, the President of India awarded him with the Param VishishtSeva Medal, UttamYudhSeva Medal, AtiVishishtSeva Medal, Sena Medal and VishishtSeva Medal.

After appreciating the value-based culture he experienced at LBSIM, he highlighted the challenges faced by the leaders today such as problems in adaptability, implementation of strategies and striking a work-life balance. Highlighting "Strategic Leadership", he spoke on concepts like performance consistency, trust-building, respect for different cultures, employee engagement, thriving amidst politics, and sticking to one's values. Merging the leadership qualities required in Army to the ones required in business enterprises, he highlighted the term, "Consumers and Employees First" and the importance of conceptual skills and interpersonal skills to become an accepted leader rather than a normative leader.

Moving on, Shri Anil Shastri delivered the Presidential Address to the audience. He has been the Former Union Minister, Govt. of India and is Presently the Chairman, Board of Governors, LBSIM, Delhi. He is known for his outspoken views and has been instrumental in promoting higher education particularly in the field of management. He entailed the long journey of LBSIM over past 25 years and the initial difficulties the institute faced while setting up which it overcame through the commitment, passion and hard work of every person associated with it. Also, he thanked the people working with the institute at present and putting in their efforts to nurture socially sensitive leaders.

After this, LBSIM had the opportunity to felicitate some Alumni of the institute for their notable contribution in the corporate world. First to be felicitated was Mr. Amit Kapoor who was a part of the batch of 1995-97 and is currently working as the General Manager of SEBI. Next was Mr. Rohit Khetan, a student of the 1995-97 batch. The Entrepreneurial spirit made him enter the Food Processing Industry and set up a Roller Flour Mill, by the name “Shri Shyam Agro Biotech Pvt ltd”. The Company is today one of the few ISO 22000 Certified (By Intertek) Roller Flour Mills. Mr Vikas Nangia was the next to be awarded. After graduating in the 1998 batch, he started working in various successful banks like ICICI Bank, Axis Bank, RBS and is currently the Managing Director & Co-founder at Acore Capital Investments Pvt Ltd.

The next alumnus was Mr Prashant Kaul, who right after graduating from LBSIM, joined Smart Cube as a research analyst and is currently working as the Vice President – Operational Excellence at Bank of America. The last alumna to be awarded was Mrs Manjuri Sinha of 2005-07 batch, who is currently working as global head of talent acquisition, OLX group in Berlin. The Ceremony ended with a Vote of Thanks presented by Col. Ajay Sood, Chief Administrative Officer, LBSIM.
