A significant number of MBA entrance examinations like SNAP, IIFT, MAT, CMAT, XAT etc., have a separate section on General Awareness. This section can be further divided into 2 sub-sections: Static GK and Current GK. Broadly speaking, Current GK consists of areas/ topics that change overtime.
GK is a section feared by a majority of MBA aspirants, due to the unfamiliarity of the topics involved. Current GK preparation involves keeping yourself updated with the current affairs from India and around the world. This requires disciplined and regular reading of newspapers and current affairs magazines. Also, in order to fully understand a news piece, one must know the background as well as the concepts involved. This makes current GK preparation even more challenging.
In this article, we will first take a look at the past year trends with respect to the weightage given to current GK questions in the GK section of the papers mentioned above. Further, we will discuss how to prepare for this sub-section in a methodical manner. Also, we will see the broad areas from which you can expect questions from, along with the best resources for current affairs.
Why is GK Important?
GK-based questions, due to their inherent nature, provide you better accuracy. This is because, if you know the answer to a GK question, there is little scope for confusion! However, this is only applicable if you do not indulge in blind guesswork. Further, the GK section is highly time-efficient, as there is no calculation work and analysis involved. You can use this to your advantage by allocating more time to other sections of the examination.
