LPU was founded as Lovely Professional University in 2005 by Mr. Ashok Mittal.
The college was affiliated with Punjab Technical University. In 2001 Started with Lovely Institute of Management, In 2002 Lovely Institute of Technology (Engineering and Pharmacy), In 2003 Lovely Institute of Education and Lovely Institute of LAW, In 2004 Lovely Institute of Technology (Architecture, Polytechnic, Higher studies & Vocational Studies), In 2005 BPT, M.Ed., D. Pharm (Ayr, PGDCA, In 2006 under UGC Act became Lovely Professional University and In 2011 Distance Education.
In 2016, LPU launched a startup school to give its students a platform to nurture their innovative ideas. It was inaugurated by Finance Minister Arun Jaitley.
Lovely Professional University strongly believes in the fact that monetary constraints should not be an obstacle for a student to have access to quality education. So the University offers India’s largest Private Scholarship Scheme. The objective of the scheme is to realize the vast talents that may be hidden due to financial constraints. (Under this scheme in last five years LPU has awarded scholarships to more than 30,000 students worth Rs. 300+ crores.)
Students admitted through LPUNEST-2017 may avail Scholarship on basis of any of the following:
'Top 35% applicants' appearing for LPUNEST (subject to qualifying LPUNEST-2017), will be eligible for Scholarship upto Rs. 1.5 Lac per annum. Scholarship details are as per the following table:

All those applicants who 'qualify LPUNEST-2017', (may or may not be among top 35% applicants appearing for LPUNEST-2017) may also avail Scholarship on the basis of Marks in Graduation or Marks in Qualifying previous to Graduation (i.e. 10+2) as per the following table:
